Doctor tries to book Rs 400 birthday cake online, tricked into Rs 53,000

A 31-year-old doctor working in a multi-specialty hospital was duped for Rs 53,000 while trying to place an online order for a birthday cake worth Rs 400. A cyber fraud took place is passed off as the employee of the bakery and instigated the victim to send the enormous quantity.

An FIR was registered at the DB Marg police station on December 10. The victim told police she worked at a multi-specialty hospital in Girgaon and wanted to order a birthday cake for her friend. The plan was to collect the cake after finishing the workday and celebrate her friend’s birthday on the night of December 7. That day, while she was at work, she searched on Google for the coordinates of the Merwan bakery located in Girgaon. However, she was unaware that many cyber frauds give their own numbers for wine merchants, bakeries, online shopping portals, bank customer services, courier services, etc., and have managed to fool them. hundreds of people over the past few years.

The woman called a number and a fraudster, posing as a bakery worker, picked up the phone. He asked her to make a deposit of Rs 400 to reserve the cake. She made the payment, after which he asked her to pay an additional Rs 20 for receiving a receipt.

After paying Rs 20, he again asked her to pay Rs 15,236 as a registration fee, which he says will soon be refunded. The doctor hesitated a little but trusted him and paid the amount. Shortly thereafter, he said there had been a mistake and asked her to pay an additional 38,472 rupees. The doctor still hesitated, but made the payment believing it would be reimbursed.

The fraudster then asked him to make a third payment of Rs 50,000, citing another reason. At that point, the doctor realized that she was being cheated and cut the call. She alerted her bank of the transactions and then approached the local police station to file a complaint.
