URBAN RHETORIC_ISSUE 6_SEPTEMBER 2022_EFFECTIVE URBAN PLANNING

THEME-
“A good city is like a good party. People stay longer than necessary because they are having fun” -Jan Gehl

Public spaces are important and indispensable assets of our cities. They fill the urban voids with activity, life and celebration; shape the identity of the city. They are the aggregator of people, places of meeting and exchange. The function and design of various urban typologies in the public realm represent the technology of its time, the culture and values of the people, and the democratic ideals of government.

Our perception and experience of the city is changing and this change is subject to variables such as scientific and technological inventions, the transformation of societal norms and advances in human thought. Even in the midst of this change, the relevance of public space remains constant. Certain qualities of urban spaces shape our daily experience of place, thus defining the experience of the city. The potential to benefit from and connect with the public realm lies in the nuances of design, function, accessibility and symbolism of place. Few of the many qualities that contribute to versatile and timeless public typologies are-
1. Approach and accessibility – The use of space in the urban fabric is governed by its accessibility for people of all genders, age groups and disabilities. People tend to feel comfortable and happy in welcoming and safe spaces.

2. The Comfort of Space – Public spaces are essential for facilitating human connections, where people make new friends, catch up with old ones, enjoy festivals, indulge in public art, or seek respite during a long way. Comfortable public spaces are those that are easy to use, enrich human interaction, weave a complex connection between people and place, develop a sense of place.

3. Function of space – Some urban typologies like bus stops, parks, gas stations are indispensable because they contribute to the functioning of the city. They provide the necessary facilities that help the city thrive, sustain and grow. These living spaces manifest themselves at different scales, ranging from furniture for promenades to parks for children and the elderly.

4. Symbolism and meaning – The city accumulates layers of socio-cultural and religious connotations over time. Urban typologies often manifest these intangible societal notions and values through their form and symbolism. These structures/monuments are important landmarks that add meaning and texture to the urban.

5. Historical Significance – The city bears witness to the glorious victories of its ancient rulers and also bears the scars of the bloody battles lost. Some historic structures or neighborhoods decay and become obsolete, while others are preserved and restored. However, each of them tells a story, reminding people of their historic past and keeping them grounded.

TUR Issue 6 aims to explore these versatile and timeless urban typologies, regardless of scale, location, function or era. The intention behind this publication is to demonstrate the power of architecture and design to shape cities, enrich human relationships, unite people, and represent eras of technology and time. Such narratives are an attempt to pause to reflect on the current dynamics of urban structure and also a retrospective to explore the desired qualities of inclusive and happy cities.

The Urban Rhetoric invites artists, designers, architects, planners and urban planners to send in their artwork/illustrations/photographic essays that resonate with the theme of this issue.
