How to stop Alexa from announcing the contents of your packages this holiday season
Echo smart speakers and smart displays have a handy feature that can show and tell you when there is a package on your doorstep and even what’s in it. While it can be useful most of the time, while on vacation it could seriously spoil some surprises.
Avoid making Grinch-like moves on these holidays and manage your Amazon purchase notifications in the Alexa app to help keep the magic alive. Along with the package announcements customization options, the notifications section of the app also has a number of settings that you can turn on or off to make the voice assistant a bit more useful when it comes to shopping. that you perform on Amazon. Below are some of the more useful things you might want to tweak this holiday season.
How to turn off parcel notifications on Alexa
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More in the lower right corner.
- Select Settings> Notifications> Amazon Shopping.
- Under “Say or show item titles”, turn off “include items in your cart marked as freebies, or those that might be holiday gifts.”
Once done, you will still receive announcements on the Echo speakers and onscreen notifications on the Echo smart screens for your packages, but the ones that you marked as gifts in your cart (or that Alexa suspects are ) will not include a description of what they are.
This is handy if you really want housekeeping to know that there is toilet paper on your doorstep, but not that the Nintendo Switch has arrived. To make sure this is working properly, check “Send as a gift” when the item is in your Amazon cart.
For added security, you can turn off all items under âSay or show item titlesâ. Then you will simply be notified when a package is being delivered or delivered, but never what it is.
If you don’t want any package notifications from Alexa – anywhere, in any way – and want to be surprised when you open the door, turn off everything on this screen. (Note: These settings only affect announcements on Echo speakers, you will still receive push, email, or other notifications that you signed up for.)
How to stop Alexa from asking you to rate purchases
While you’re here, if you’re annoyed that Alexa is pestering you to review that cheese grater you bought two months ago (this happened to me at 9:30 p.m. when I asked Alexa to read my Audible book), there’s a quick fix.
Scroll further down on the same purchase notifications page and turn off âRequest for reviews of products you have purchasedâ.
You can also prevent Alexa from announcing the latest deal on laundry detergent you usually buy by turning off “Recommendations and Offers”.
There are other options here that you might want to check out if you often find your Alexa speaker flashing yellow – like it’s trying to get your attention (which it is).
If you use Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program, Alexa can audibly notify you if an item in your next shipment is out of stock, among other things. You can turn this option on or off under Order Updates, it will affect the announcements about order updates.
You can use this screen to prevent Alexa from randomly running ‘recommendations and personalized offers’ on your speakers, as well as to turn off voice assistant updates regarding your Audible account (for example, if you have a new credit).
