Joan Didion, the famous prose stylist, novelist and screenwriter who chronicled American culture and consciousness with cool detachment, humor and a fragile awareness of the mess, then turned to herself in books that probed the depths of personal tragedies, died Thursday morning at the age of 87. .
Didion died at her home in New York City from complications from Parkinson’s disease, according to her editor, Alfred A. Knopf.
